Drawing on shrooms
I only do the good drugs
Hello
One of my best friends in the whole world, Mathew, is going to leave NYC to go to grad school so we did a little weekend trip upstate as one last hoorah together.
We told each other stories, played Sardines and hide and seek, and frolicked in the snow (which was a pleasant surprise, since we thought we’d be rained in).
I also performed shadow clone jutsu successfully for the first time.
Some of us also partook in psychedelics. One of them was me. The psychedelics was shrooms.
I’m not very public about my drug use online — Sometimes I’ll mention drugs subtly, maybe use an innuendo, maybe reference them in a comic. In person, I’m quite passionate about the benefits of psychedelics and am unashamed of my experiences partaking. I even did a thesis on the topic in college, but I won’t bore you.
In any case, I had an amazing and beautiful experience with my closest friends. Sometimes during my trips, I’ll draw! I love to see what I can come up with while in a new state of mind. Also, drawing is fun!!! And when tripping, you can experience fun in a more youthful and uninhibited way.
Here are some scans of my drawings
This is a quick sketch of my soulmate Duo, as he cooks probably the most delicious steak I ever ate in my life. Here’s a picture too:
The steak was just so good. I had to document it in more ways than one.
Some other doodles here. During the trip I was enamored by the shapes of the profiles of my friends. I started these drawings by referencing some of their profiles and then I just let the pen flow.
This wasn’t from last weekend, but here is a drawing from the very first time I took psychedelics:
It’s very strange. I was 19 when I drew this.
Here you can see that the teeth make two faces: one using the eyes and nose below it, and another to create a fish/shark creature. The rays from the fish’s eye create the brain of the facial profile to the left of it. The facial profile is of my friend who was laying down when I noticed his features resembled the mountain range we were across from, which is why I drew mountains beside him.
It’s all just a silly doodle, fun play. But it’s a striking visual representation of my thoughts cascading as I experienced the effects of the drug.
I find that mushrooms expand my mind in the most positive ways. It allows me to empathize more with my friends, it rejuvenates my childlike curiosities, and it helps me to remember what’s important in life, which is loving one another, joy, living in the present, and being alive.
It also pushes me to come up with different ideas and to approach my drawings in different ways… if I can even get to drawing. Before I partake, I’m always prepared to draw, anticipating crazy ideas, assuming I’ll feel the urge to be creative. Ironically and usually, my efforts are thwarted by my persistent and certain desire to simply exist. To take note of my being. To smile and laugh with my friends. To reflect on my life choices and my opinions. To think about God. To touch grass. To feel the air in my lungs.
If I’m lucky, I’ll find the urge to draw. I got lucky this weekend.
Rex
I recommend that you research psychedelic medicine and all that it can do for people. Mushrooms are still pretty stigmatized, which is what prevented me from posting publicly about them until now. Some family members and role models are subscribed to this newsletter and I was afraid of what they would think of me.
But I’m certain that if anybody approaches the topic with an open mind, that they too will be convinced of it’s medicinal and magical qualities.
